Gear is everything around the cannabis itself: pipes and bongs for flower, rigs and e-rigs for extracts, 510 batteries for vape carts, plus grinders, rolling supplies, storage jars and cleaning kits. It's the one category where nothing needs a lab test — but the right tools change how everything else performs.
A sensible starter kit costs less than an eighth: a spoon pipe or small bong, a decent grinder, and a jar. Water pieces filter and cool smoke for noticeably smoother sessions; a quality grinder gives an even burn and catches kief you'd otherwise lose. For concentrates, e-rigs (like the Puffco line) have largely replaced torch-and-nail setups — precise temperatures, no open flame. And if you vape carts, a $10–20 510 battery with adjustable voltage outperforms whatever came free with your first cart.
Around Los Angeles, gear runs $1.82 for papers to $420+ for premium glass and e-rigs, and dispensaries carry it alongside licensed products so you can sort everything in one order. Two habits pay for themselves: clean your glass regularly (isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt is the classic), and store flower in airtight glass instead of the bag it came in.
A grinder, a pipe (or papers, or a small bong), and a lighter — under $40 total. Add an airtight jar if you're buying more than a gram at a time. Everything else is upgrade, not requirement.
Any 510-thread battery fits any 510 cart — that's most of the market. Pod systems (STIIIZY, PAX) need their own brand's hardware. Adjustable-voltage batteries are worth the few extra dollars: lower voltage, better flavor.
A pipe is cheaper, simpler and pocketable. A bong filters and cools the smoke, so it's noticeably smoother once you're past your first few sessions. Plenty of people own a $20 version of each.
Either a traditional rig (glass piece, quartz banger, torch, dab tool) or an e-rig that handles temperature for you. E-rigs cost more upfront but remove the guesswork — most extract regulars end up with one.
Even grind means even burn — joints that don't canoe and bowls that don't waste flower. Multi-chamber grinders also collect kief, which is free potency for topping bowls. It's the best $20 upgrade in the category.
Coarse salt and 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, shaken, then rinsed thoroughly with hot water. Five minutes, monthly (weekly if you're a regular), and everything tastes better. Dirty water pieces are the most common avoidable gear problem.
